Best Spray Foam Insulation for Attics

Are you insulating the attic floor or the roof deck, and are you sealing or filling?

An attic is two different jobs that get one name. Insulating the floor keeps the attic outside the house: blown or batt insulation over the ceiling, with the leaks in that ceiling sealed first. Insulating the roof deck brings the attic inside: foam on the underside of the sheathing, which turns the attic into an unvented conditioned space with its own rules.

Foam is the right tool for the sealing and the roof deck. It is the wrong tool for the floor fill. A 1,000 sq ft attic at the recommended R-49 to R-60 needs 8.66 to 10.6 in of foam at the makers’ claimed R-5.66 per inch, which is 8,657 to 10,601 board feet, or nineteen to twenty-three 24-can kits once you round up to boxes you can buy. Blown cellulose or fiberglass does that job for a fraction of the cost.

Two jobs

Air seal the attic floor with foam sealant at top plates, wire and pipe penetrations, chases and the hatch; then fill with blown insulation. Or foam the roof deck and treat the attic as conditioned space.

Ignition barrier

Foam in an attic you only enter to service utilities has to be covered by an ignition barrier, unless a code evaluation report exempts that specific product. The 2021 IRC list of acceptable barriers: 1-1/2 in mineral fiber, 1/4 in wood structural panel, 3/8 in particleboard, 1/4 in hardboard, 3/8 in gypsum board, or corrosion-resistant steel at 0.016 in.

Roof deck R-value

An unvented roof assembly needs an air-impermeable insulation layer sized for the climate zone under Table R806.5, from R-5 in zones 1 to 3 up to R-35 in zone 8, before any air-permeable insulation is added beneath it.

What the code says

The provisions that apply, and the numbers they use

Section numbers are from the 2021 International Residential Code. Your city or county adopts one edition of the code and changes parts of it, and your local building official has the final word. A thermal barrier and an ignition barrier are different things, and the glossary explains both.

IRC R316.5.3Attics entered only for the service of utilities: foam plastic may be left without a thermal barrier where it is covered by one of the ignition-barrier materials the section lists, in the thickness the section gives. Local adoption and the product’s own report govern.
IRC R806.5Unvented attic and enclosed rafter assemblies: air-impermeable insulation on the underside of the roof sheathing, with minimum R-values for that layer by climate zone in Table R806.5.
IRC R316.6Specific approval: foam plastic may be used without the prescriptive barriers where the assembly is approved on the basis of end-use tests such as NFPA 286, FM 4880, UL 1040 or UL 1715. An evaluation report is evidence of that only within the exact product, thickness, substrate, coating and geometry it covers.

Single-can kits

Where foam is not the answer
  • Deep fill on an attic floor. Blown insulation reaches R-49 to R-60 for a fraction of the foam cost, and foam adds nothing there that sealing the floor first does not.
  • A vented attic you intend to keep vented. Foam on the roof deck closes the vents by design; if the baffles and soffit vents are staying, the deck is not a foam job.
  • An attic with an unsealed combustion appliance or knob-and-tube wiring. Knob-and-tube is old wiring with no ground and no modern insulation on it, and it sheds heat on purpose. Both need resolving before any insulation goes anywhere near them.
  • Recessed lights that are not rated for insulation contact. Burying a fixture that was never built for it is a fire risk, and the fix is a new airtight IC-rated can, not a careful spray around the old one.
  • A bath fan or dryer duct that dumps into the attic instead of outside. Foam over it seals a moisture source into the assembly. Run the duct out through the roof or the gable first.

Quantity, worked once

Sealing a 1,000 sq ft attic floor, then filling it

Board feet are square feet times inches. The kit figures are the makers’ theoretical yields, which every maker that defines the term says are laboratory numbers; plan on less.

  1. Perimeter top plates: about 130 linear ft of joint
  2. Penetrations: typically 20 to 40 wire and pipe holes, one hatch
  3. Foam sealant: 3 to 6 straw cans or one gun can with a gun
  4. Deep fill to R-49: blown insulation, not foam

The foam part of this job costs less than $80 in sealant cans. The insulation part is a blown-in job, and no can kit on this site is the right product for it.

Can I spray foam my attic floor instead of blowing in insulation?

You can, and it is the most expensive way to reach R-49. A 1,000 sq ft attic needs about 8,657 board feet of foam at a claimed R-5.66 per inch, which is nineteen 24-can kits at their theoretical yield, and more once you allow for the loss every maker warns about. Seal the floor with foam, then blow in insulation.

Does foam on the roof deck need to be covered?

Yes, in almost every case. If the attic is entered only to service utilities, an ignition barrier off the code list will do, or an assembly approved under R316.6 by an end-use test that covers this product at this thickness. If the attic is living or storage space, it takes a full thermal barrier. Ask the official before you buy.

What R-value does the roof deck foam need?

Table R806.5 sets the minimum for the air-impermeable layer by climate zone, from R-5 in zone 1 to R-35 in zone 8, when air-permeable insulation is added beneath it; the whole assembly still has to reach the ceiling target for the zone.
